TAKE PRIDE IN SPENCERIAN

This two-day workshop will introduce you to the fascinating world of Spencerian Script. You will learn the history behind this beautiful script, and familiarize yourself with the tools used to execute it. On Day One, we will make our way together through the basics of the pointed pen, fundamental strokes, and lowercase letterforms. Then on Day Two, we will dive deeper into capital letters and learn ways to add extra personality to our script. You will leave the workshop with the knowledge and confidence to further practice Spencerian at home.

Topics will cover:
• The history of Platt Rogers Spencer
• Tools and equipment - oblique penholder, nibs, inks, papers, etc.
• The foundation of strokes for both the Minuscules (lowercase) and Majuscules (capitals)
• Fundamental concepts of Spencerian: Curvature, Movement, Contrast, Variability; muscularity of penmanship, posture, writing zone, letter height and size, element of shading, basic layout & design for composition writing in Spencerian.

THE ART OF ORNAMENTAL PENMANSHIP
Sometimes referred to as "the Master's Script", Ornamental Penmanship is the most advanced level of Spencerian. There are very few penmen living today who are skilled in this at a Master's level. It is much more than simply writing Spencerian with a high level of skill.

Topics will cover:
• The compound-curved capitals,"twisters", double and triple looped capitals
• Superscription
• False shading and reverse shading
• Compound entrance and exit strokes
• Advanced Off-Hand Flourishing techniques
• Design Composition (using script and flourishing to support each other in a composition)
• Pen manipulation
• Flourished capitals and filigree flourishing

• Students who have joined the "Take Pride in Spencerian", intermediate and advance are welcome.

ABOUT
Michael Sull was born in New York in 1949. He is the Master Penman and Past President of IAMPETH (International Association of Master Penman, Engrossers, and Teachers of Handwriting)and Ronald Reagan's calligrapher after his Presidency. He began to study calligraphy and trained under Messrs. Bullock, Fairbanks and Paul O'Hara. He worked as a Calligrapher/ Lettering Artist in Hallmark Cards, Inc. in Kansas City, Missouri in 1981. In 1987, he organized and developed the Spencerian Saga, an intensive week long workshop devoted to Spencerian Script and Ornamental Penmanship. He has published Spencerian Script & Ornamental Penmanship, Learning to Write Spencerian Script and American Cursive Handwriting.
Kalo is one of Hong Kong's leading calligrapher, teacher and stationery designer, specialising in western dip ink calligraphy and bespoke stationery designs under the brand "Kalo Make Art". Born in Hong Kong, Kalo studied art in London where she lived for the past decade. Seeing a lack of creative hubs in Hong Kong, Kalo opened Hong Kong’s first calligraphy studio in June 2015, with the aim to create a cozy and relaxing environment for people to learn and enjoy the art of calligraphy. The studio hosts a range of creative events, such as calligraphy workshops, jamming practice evenings and monthly pen meets. Her calligraphy studio and online shop now sells a range of calligraphy supplies to cater the increase demand in calligraphy writing.
